Introducing the very first Sustainable Seafood Week NYC, in order to drive more public awareness around eating and sourcing sustainable seafood. SSW NYC 2013 will take place from May 13th-19th and is a culinary-fueled celebration showcasing the efforts of local fishermen, chefs, organizations and communities to promote responsible sourcing of seafood.
There is an exciting lineup of collaborative culinary and educational programming starting with an Oysters, Clams & Cocktails Benefit at Riverpark on Monday, May 13th to kick off the week. There will be an opening introduction by Chef Evan Hanczor of Parish Hall and then you’ll be able to mosey around to individual stations featuring 4-5 different shellfish growers and their mollusks, where you can talk to each of them one on one, hear their different stories and have your very head to head oyster taste test! Brooklyn Gin, Sixpoint Brewery, and Frederick Wildman will be sponsoring libations to wash down all that oyster goodness and event proceeds will go towards funding the New York Harbor School‘s Billion Oyster Project and they will be onsite to reclaim all those empty shells!
Later in the week will be screenings of award-winning documentaries, “Sushi: The Global Catch” and “Shellshocked: Saving Oysters to Save Ourselves“, a Union Square Greenmarket filleting demo, a sustainable seafood supper club dinner at Brooklyn Commune, Porgy Day at Jimmy’s No. 43, and wrapping it all up on Sunday, May 19th will be Shuck You! and oyster shooter challenge at Evelyn Drinkery.

In addition to these events, some of the city’s notable chefs and restaurants, including ABC Kitchen, Amali, Arlington Club, Boqueria Flatiron and Soho, DBGB, Grand Central Oyster Bar, Grey Lady, Hunter’s, Jimmy’s 43, Kaia Wine Bar, Louro, Luke’s Lobster, Manzanilla, Parish Hall, Riverpark, STK Midtown, The John Dory, Upstate, ‘Wichcraft, Wong, will feature sustainable finfish or shellfish dishes on their menu throughout the week.
For many of these restaurants, serving ‘sustainably’ is already a part of their business philosophy, while for others – it may be their first experience with sustainable seafood products. The week celebrates both continued efforts as well as first steps by NYC restaurants towards sourcing responsibly-harvested seafood.
